I love the Pokemon TCG hand-drawn artwork, but the 3D/CGI looks really cheap to me. They look like were done quickly as an afterthought. From what I've seen they've stopped producing them. Is there a story to why they happened at all?

Asker has not accepted an answer.
I think they were created by a few different artists. I would agree that they are not very good. I don't think they were actually an "afterthough" I just don't think they came out as nice as they might have hoped...
I know this is completely different, but I think it is just awesome: http://pokemondb.net/spinoff/pokedex-3d

Heres a little fact i reaserched for ya.
The first Pokémon TCG sets took inspiration from the then released Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue and initially featured illustrations by Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhiro Arita and Keiji Kinebuchi.

My guess is that they wanted to expirement with 3d/cgi to produce more cards that way. I guess they didnt like it and scrapped away the idea.
